Department Overview

  • The Palm Springs Unified School District Security Department is dedicated to the safety and well-being of its educational community, comprising over 21,000 students and 3,000 staff members across more than 30 locations within a 214-square-mile area. The administration department, along with the committed team of Campus Safety and District Patrol Officers, plays a crucial role in maintaining a secure environment and places a significant emphasis on building out a safe culture within the educational community.

We have established a crucial partnership with Safer Schools Together to enhance its security measures. This collaboration brings advanced tools and expertise in investigating and verifying the authenticity of digital threats, allowing for a proactive approach to address potential dangers. The platform not only assists in identifying credible threats but also warrants efficient resource allocation, distinguishing between genuine concerns and false alarms. This technological integration highlights the department's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge solutions to stay ahead of emerging risks. The collaboration, emphasizing seamless coordination with law enforcement, reflects a dedication to fostering a secure atmosphere and reinforces the department's proactive stance in safeguarding the educational community from evolving security challenges.

The District Security Department is dedicated to providing top-tier training and has hosted multiple National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) trainings. NASRO is recognized as the national standard for training in law enforcement duties specifically tailored for officers stationed on educational campuses. Collaboration with the Police Departments of Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, and Riverside County Sheriff’s, we can strategically assign School Resource Officers to each of our high schools. These officers serve as invaluable resources for both students and staff, working closely with local law enforcement, contracting additional support when needed, and efficiently coordinating resources to address security concerns.

A notable aspect of the department’s dedication to safety is the pride it takes in having its very own Certified ALICE Instructors. ALICE, which stands for Alert∙Lockdown∙Inform∙Counter∙Evacuate, introduces an option-based response to any violent critical incident, including Active Assailant situations. The training empowers individuals to make informed decisions based on their specific circumstances, offering viable alternatives beyond traditional lockdown procedures. This comprehensive commitment highlights the department's proactive stance in preparing and empowering the educational community to respond effectively to potential threats.

The fully staffed Campus Safety Officer team remains strategically positioned in high schools and intermediate schools throughout the district, ready to respond to any situation. Their primary focus is on the well-being of students, staff, and assets, creating a secure learning environment and fostering positive relationships within the school community. District Patrol Officers form an essential part of safety efforts, providing 24/7 coverage and monitoring/responding to fire and burglary alarms, as well as various calls for assistance across all district properties. Their presence is crucial in maintaining the overall security of educational facilities.

Under the leadership of the Executive Director of Security & Disaster Preparedness and District Security Supervisors, the Palm Springs Unified School District Security Department is dedicated to the development of a safe and secure learning environment. Through collaboration, resource allocation, and a committed staff, the department strives to create an atmosphere where students and staff can thrive academically and personally.
