Our Role

  • Supplemental Educational Services (SES) are additional academic interventions designed to increase the academic achievement of students in schools in the second year of improvement, corrective action, or restructuring.  These services, which are in addition to instruction provided during the school day, may include academic assistance such as tutoring, remediation, and other supplemental academic enrichment services that are consistent with the content and instruction used by the District.  SES must be high quality, research-based, and specifically designed to increase student academic achievement.

    The PSUSD Supplemental Interventions Department encompasses a broad range of services. The Student Success Team (SST) process is critical when looking at learning gaps. This process brings together school officials and parents to specifically discuss academic and/or behavioral concerns. This process ensures that students receive support in a timely manner.  

    Students who experience academic difficulties in grades 3-8 have the opportunity to participate in differentiated alternate supports. These supports can be delivered before school, afterschool, and weekends or designated breaks.  Students who qualify for alternate supports will be assessed using the i-Ready online diagnostic assessment. The Xstream Learning program is used to align services with student needs and interest.

    Xstream learning is an approach where teachers use Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking during supplemental learning academies. We have fully integrated NGSS units of study to guide the development of the lessons and instruction. It is an opportunity to bring community resources together while engaging students in the domain of “Authentic Interest.” 

    The Afterschool Safety and Education Program (ASES) is pivotal in helping students expand their learning experiences. Students receive extra support in learning as well as opportunities to engage in enrichment activities. Each school has a designated lead to oversee the daily functions of the program.

    The goal of our department is to unify and align PSUSD Supplemental Services to ensure equity and access for all students.
