District Arts Office Artist In Residence - Emily Culhan - Art In Literature Program 2021 - Current

Emily Culhan has been a Museum Educator for over 15 years with her focus on the arts and youth. Emily received her BA in History from SUNY Geneseo and her MA in Museum Studies from Syracuse University. She believes in the transformative power of museums and art to change people’s lives. She began at the Palm Springs Art Museum working with teens from throughout the Coachella Valley to foster leadership skills and a lifelong love of art. She has also worked as an educator at the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert, Cabot’s Pueblo Museum, and The Living Desert. She was the Arts Now Project Lead for the Palm Springs Unified School District, working to ensure equitable access to arts programming for all students. Emily is currently enrolled at San José State University earning her Masters of Library and Information Science with a focus on becoming a Children’s Librarian. Books give children the opportunity to both see themselves and to learn about others in a gentle but powerful way. As the Artist-in-Residence for the Art and Literature program, Emily uses multi-cultural stories to promote social-emotional learning, empathy, and a celebration of children’s differences while recognizing their similarities. The accompanying art projects use the elements of design with a focus on color, line, and shape, so that each child can create a unique work of art that reflects their personal artistic choices.
