Please Join Us For Our Diversity & Racial Equity Conference

Last winter I shared in this space some of the work our district has been and will be doing around our commitment to ensuring equity for all PSUSD students. In just a short time, we have already made great strides, and I couldn’t be more proud of our staff and community members who have dedicated themselves to these most important efforts.

As we continue implementation of programs, projects and initiatives focused on creating and maintaining an anti-racist and anti-discriminatory learning community that creates safe learning spaces where all students are welcomed, included and respected, I wanted to share an important event we have coming up later this month. PSUSD will be hosting our first Diversity and Racial Equity Conference on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, and I invite each one of you to join us for a morning filled with opportunities for deep learning and rich conversation.

Our conference begins at 9 a.m. with our keynote speaker Dr. Nicole Anderson followed by breakout sessions that will focus on Exclusionary “isms” (racism, sexism, colorism, tokenism and heterosexism). Attendees will have the opportunity to attend two of these sessions. There will also be a special conference strand geared toward our student attendees, who are encouraged to participate as well. We will then gather back together for a hosted lunch and entertainment, which will be followed by a panel discussion that will include all three valley superintendents and several local city mayors. The event will conclude at 2 p.m.

Attendance is free of charge and limited to the first 500. We anticipate reaching that maximum capacity, so I encourage you to register yourself and your family members as early as possible DiversityConferenceRegistration.

This work is not always easy, as we delve into areas that often make us uncomfortable. Nonetheless, this work is a top priority for our staff and should be one for all of our community as we move forward to ensure that each and every one of our students has what he or she needs when he or she needs it and that all PSUSD students know that each of them is a valued member of our district family. Thank you for your continued support of our work and our students.

See you next month,
