At DHSHS, we believe that encouraging students' social and emotional wellness is an important part of supporting the whole child. The center is designated to be a calm and supervised space for students to de-stress, relax, reset and reconnect with the classroom.

Meet the Wellness Center Team

Vera Johnson,
Wellness Center AdministratorMrs. Johnson has dedicated over 10 years to serving our school community in various roles, including Counselor, Dean of Students, and currently Assistant Principal overseeing Counseling, Mental Health, and Discipline at Desert Hot Springs High School. With 28 years of experience in education, she recognizes the growing importance of mental health support for students and is committed to ensuring that the services provided help all students succeed both academically and personally.

Daniel Lowe, Wellness Center Coach
Mr. Lowe serves in a universal and introductory role. Upon their arrival, Mr. Lowe assesses the student’s needs, as it pertains to emotional support and helps direct them to the most appropriate support. When students enter the Wellness Center, they find a welcoming and relaxed environment and are encouraged to participate in self-guided activities that allow the students to disconnect from stress, so they can reset and then return to class in a reasonable time.

Pam Mathis, Wellness Center Counselor
Mrs. Mathis has been with the district for over 20 years, serving as a teacher, Dean of Students, and Counselor. As a counselor in a high school wellness center, Ms. Mathis focuses on supporting students' emotional and mental well-being by offering individual and group counseling to help them cope with stress, anxiety, and personal challenges. She works closely with teachers, parents, and staff to ensure students receive the emotional support they need.

Mr. Garcia supports students' emotional and mental well-being by providing individual counseling and coping strategies. He creates a safe space for students to explore their feelings, manage stress, and develop resilience. His role also includes collaborating with teachers and staff to foster a supportive and healthy school environment. Mr. Garcia is dedicated to helping students thrive both academically and personally.

Samantha Martinez,

Mrs. Martinez offers a supportive and confidential space where students can explore their thoughts, emotions, and challenges and develop coping strategies to improve their mental health and well-being. She aims to build a trusting relationship where students feel comfortable discussing personal issues, whether they are related to school stress, social relationships, family dynamics, or mental health concerns like anxiety or depression. Mrs. Martinez’s goal is to empower students to develop self-awareness, resilience, and the skills needed to navigate life’s challenges.
