Parent/Guardian Request for Student Opt-Out of Specific Instructional Content

Request for Religious Accommodation for Instructional Content in Alignment with Mahmoud v. Taylor

Palm Springs Unified School District is committed to working in partnership with families while providing a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for all students.
In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor, the District has developed procedures to ensure families have the option to request an opt-out when materials may conflict with sincerely held religious beliefs.

These procedures are intended to promote transparency, clear communication, and mutual respect. They do not prohibit instruction or curriculum but provide families with a process to request alternative activities when appropriate. Students who opt out will not be penalized and will be provided with an alternative learning option.

If you are a parent or guardian and wish to request that your child be excused from specific lessons, assignments, or instructional topics due to a conflict with your family's religious upbringing, please use the form below. 

How the Request is Processed

Families are encouraged to review the procedures below and contact their school or the district with any questions. Palm Springs Unified School District values open dialogue and remains committed to supporting the academic and social-emotional success of every student.

• Each form submitted will be carefully reviewed by the school site and/or district.  Excusal from identified content is not automatic.
• Each form submitted will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.  The school/district determination is dependent on the specific religious beliefs you assert and the specific nature of the educational requirement or content.
• After the school/district review of the request, we will determine the appropriate response and will develop alternative arrangements for your child when needed.
