Dear PSUSD Parents and Guardians:

 The last few weeks have certainly been among the most unique and challenging of all of our lives. It seems most everything has changed including how we are permitted to interact with one another and leaving our homes for any reason other than essential business. The physical closure of schools in Riverside County along with most throughout the entire state and country has changed the way our students are receiving their education. One thing I hope I can convey to you is that  the Palm Springs Unified School District’s Board of Education, administration and entire staff are 100 percent committed to providing our students with the educational, social and emotional tools they need during this difficult time. While our physical buildings will remain closed through the end of the school year and likely well beyond that, we have been working on our three-phase distance learning plan since the moment our physical doors closed last month, and now that our spring break is over, our teachers are putting the final touches on their lesson plans. Teachers have been reaching out to their students this week to share schedules and distance learning plans for the remainder of the school year.

We know you have many questions regarding what comes next, grading, graduation and more. While we don’t have all the answers yet, we have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions that are included with this letter. We hope it will help answer some of your questions and concerns as we move forward.

Specifically in regards to grading for the remainder of the year, grading will look different than what parents are used to seeing. For elementary students, because of the nature of the current standards-based elementary report card, third trimester grades will not be issued. For secondary students, the District is moving to a “Hold Harmless”” grading system in order to ensure equity for all students. “Hold Harmless” means that all students who need to raise grades are given the opportunity to do so, while not penalizing any student. As a result, 3rd trimester grades for 6th-8th will not be lower than the 2nd trimester grade issued and 2nd semester grades for 9th-12th will not be lower than the 3rd quarter grade issued. PSUSD’s move to “hold harmless” grading is temporary and will be discontinued when students and staff physically return to school, which we hope will be in the fall.

While we are moving to this temporary system, this does not mean the school year is over for students and staff. Distance learning is essential to ensure that students have the skills they need to be successful in the future. Research shows that students who participate in any learning opportunities will earn higher grades in the future than those who do not. It is in the best interest of all students to participate in whatever learning forms they can.

This temporary policy is based on the California Department of Education (CDE) guidelines and was made in thoughtful discussion and collaboration with educational leaders at the local, county, and state level, and in partnership with our collective bargaining group.

Estimados Padres y Guardianes:

 Las últimas semanas ciertamente han estado entre las más singulares y desafiantes de todas nuestras vidas. Parece que casi todo ha cambiado, incluida la forma en que se nos permite interactuar entre nosotros y salir de nuestros hogares por cualquier motivo que no sea un negocio esencial. El cierre físico de las escuelas en el Condado de Riverside, junto con la mayoría en todo el estado y el país, ha cambiado la forma en que nuestros estudiantes reciben su educación. Una cosa que espero poder transmitirles es que la Mesa Directiva Educativa del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Palm Springs, la Administracion y todo el Personal estan 100 por ciento comprometidos a proporcionar a nuestros estudiantes las herramientas educativas, sociales y emocionales que necesitan durante este momento difícil. Si bien nuestros edificios físicos permanecerán cerrados hasta el final del año escolar y probablemente más allá de eso, hemos estado trabajando en nuestro plan de aprendizaje a distancia en tres fases desde el momento en que nuestras puertas físicas se cerraron el mes pasado, y ahora que terminaron nuestras vacaciones de primavera, nuestros maestros están dando los últimos toques a sus planes de lecciones. Los maestros se han comunicado con sus estudiantes esta semana para compartir horarios y planes de aprendizaje a distancia para el resto de la escuela.

Sabemos que tiene muchas preguntas sobre lo que viene después, las calificaciónes, las graduaciónes y más. Si bien aún no tenemos todas las respuestas, hemos compilado una lista de preguntas frecuentes que se incluyen con esta carta. Esperamos que ayude a responder algunas de sus preguntas e inquietudes a medida que seguimos adelante.

Específicamente en lo que respecta a la calificación para el resto del año, la calificación se verá diferente de lo que los padres están acostumbrados a ver. Para los estudiantes de primaria, debido a la naturaleza de la boleta de calificaciones actual basada en estándares, no se emitirán calificaciones del tercer trimestre. Para los estudiantes de secundaria y preparatoria, el Distrito se está moviendo a un sistema de calificación "Hold Harmless" para garantizar equidad para todos los estudiantes. "Hold Harmless" significa que todos los estudiantes que necesitan elevar las calificaciones tendran la oportunidad de hacerlo, sin penalizar a ningún estudiante. Como resultado, las calificaciones del tercer trimestre para el sexto al octavo grado no serán inferiores a las del segundo trimestre emitidas y las calificaciones del segundo semestre para el noveno al doceavo grado no serán inferiores a las del tercer trimestre. El movimiento del PSUSD para calificar de manera "hold harmless" es temporal y se suspenderá cuando los estudiantes y el personal regresen físicamente a la escuela, lo que esperamos que sea en el otoño.              

Mientras nos estamos moviendo a este sistema temporal, esto no significa que el año escolar haya terminado para los estudiantes y el personal. El aprendizaje a distancia es esencial para garantizar que los estudiantes tengan las habilidades que necesitan para tener éxito en el futuro. La investigación muestra que los estudiantes que participan en cualquier oportunidad de aprendizaje obtendrán calificaciones más altas en el futuro que aquellos que no lo hacen. Es en el mejor interés de los estudiantes que participen en cualquier forma de aprendizaje que puedan.    

Esta políza temporal se basa en las pautas del Departamento de Educación de California (CDE) y se realizó en una discusión reflexiva y en colaboración con líderes educativos a nivel local, del condado y estatal, y en asociación con nuestro grupo de negociación colectiva.
