Student Behavior Expectations
Respectful and Responsible Conduct
Students are expected to behave respectfully toward peers, staff, and school property, following classroom and school-wide rules that support a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment. Handbooks emphasize respectful conduct, adherence to staff directions, and cooperation in all school settings (classrooms, hallways, school grounds, and school-sponsored activities).
Obeying School Rules & Laws
Students must comply with all district and school regulations and state laws governing behavior. Under California Education Code Section 48900, a wide range of serious behaviors (e.g., causing injury, possession of weapons or drugs, harassment, hate-related acts, and bullying) are explicitly prohibited and may lead to discipline, including suspension or expulsion when appropriate.
Positive Learning Participation & Classroom Conduct
Students should arrive prepared, be on time, participate actively, and avoid disruptions. Refusal to follow reasonable directives of school personnel or classroom disruptions are handled through progressive discipline and interventions aligned with district standards and state law.
Anti-Bullying, Anti-Harassment & Nondiscrimination Expectations
PSUSD prohibits discriminatory harassment, intimidation, bullying, and related behaviors based on actual or perceived characteristics (e.g., race, gender, disability, sexual orientation). Students are expected to treat others equitably and respectfully, and violations may trigger corrective actions under district and state policies.
Engagement with Consequences & Supportive Discipline
When expectations are not met, the district uses a progressive, supportive discipline approach — emphasizing interventions, communication with families, and instructional responses before exclusionary actions (like suspension), except where immediate safety risks exist. District policy aims to maintain instructional time while addressing behavior concerns.
